Sleep and Wakefulness activities: are they intrinsically different?

چکیده
Wrist actigraphy is a well established procedure used to measure the activity of a subject for long time periods. It is a valuable tool to detect abnormal movement patterns associated with several sleep disorders, including, insomnia, phase lag and periodic limb movements. A potential ability of the actigraphy data, together with other sources of physiological and behavioral information, is the discrimination between sleep and wakefulness states. From a magnitude point of view it is usually simple to do a rough discrimination between these two states. However, the intensity alone can lead to misclassification in the presence of abnormal patterns or in the transition between states. The different characteristics of the movements in sleep and awake states is not simply a matter of magnitude, it is much more that that. Here, the purposeless nature of the movement during the sleep state is assessed and differences, comparing with the wakefulness state, are characterized.1

Actigraphy movement classification for sleep/wakefulness discrimination
Wrist actigraphy is a simple but powerful technique that allows long term monitoring of human activity. Among the wide range of areas of application, it has a special relevance in sleep studies, where its non-invasive nature makes it a valuable tool in the detection of abnormal behavioral patterns, associated with certain sleep disorders. While the detection of simple trends, such as circadian ...

متن کاملNatural waking and sleep states: a view from inside neocortical neurons.
In this first intracellular study of neocortical activities during waking and sleep states, we hypothesized that synaptic activities during natural states of vigilance have a decisive impact on the observed electrophysiological properties of neurons that were previously studied under anesthesia or in brain slices. We investigated the incidence of different firing patterns in neocortical neurons...
متن کاملHow we move is universal: scaling in the average shape of human activity
Human motor activity is constrained by the rhythmicity of the 24 hours circadian cycle, including the usual 12-15 hours sleep-wake cycle. However, activity fluctuations also appear over a wide range of temporal scales, from days to a few seconds, resulting from the concatenation of a myriad of individual smaller motor events. Furthermore, individuals present different propensity to wakefulness ...
